Junior Erin Dlott will go to the Governor’s Foreign Language Academy for Spanish this summer.

Governor’s Foreign Language Academy is a summer residential program for talented students. Dlott will attend for three weeks and hopes to improve her Spanish.

“I applied so I could improve my speaking skills,” Dlott said. “I love Spanish and think it’s a beautiful language. I really like having the chance to improve so I also applied to learn more about the language.”

Spanish teacher Ana Viamonte believes that Governor’s School is a great program that will help students like Dlott improve her skills.

“I think it is a great opportunity for every student to be immersed in the culture of the target language while not necessarily being in a foreign language country,” Viamonte said. “It’s the closest alternative they have.”

Dlott believes that her Spanish skills will develop through the academy but is worried that she may lack the ability to only speak in Spanish.

“I expect to learn about Spanish culture,” Dlott said. “However, I’m a little worried about the idea of only speaking Spanish for three weeks. Spanish is not my native language so it doesn’t come as naturally.”

Nevertheless, Dlott’s Spanish teacher believes she will improve.

“I’ve seen how other students I had in the past have improved their Spanish so dramatically after attending Governor’s School,” Viamonte said. “I think it’s an opportunity that Erin will profit from a lot.”

Junior Levi Pruddhomme will also be going to Governor’s School for Spanish.
