Overpopulation in FCPS

Overpopulation in FCPS

As more students flood the school every year, FCPS must accommodate the masses. With more “cottages” being placed in the parking lots, and classes being overfilled, it seems there’s hardly any space for anyone at school anymore.

The county officials discussed the number of new students coming in every year in FCPS. Over the past few years the population size of each incoming freshmen class has grown  significantly. From the 2012-2013 school year to 2015-2016 FCPS has grown by over 2,000 new students. This number continues to contend with growing enrollment and limited capital funding.

“Overpopulation is a problem. There’s many locker shortages, larger class sizes, and the hallways are consistently crowded,” Senior Michael Tarver said.

Superintendent Garza stated that since 2006, about 22,000 new students have been enrolled, mentioning that growing Asian and Hispanic populations make up a majority of that number. According to FCPS,  Another point being discussed at the meeting was whether the IB Program should be discontinued because most of the FCPS high schools have the Advanced Placement Program (AP), but Superintendent Garza argued that with so many students currently enrolled in IB, it would be pointless to stop it now.
