A mass shooting occurred at a mall in El Paso, Texas, killing one person and injuring three. Two suspects have been apprehended and fear has reemerged in the community as it faces its second mass shooting in the area since 2019.

Two male suspects have been taken into custody following the gunfire which occurred in the Cielo Vista Mall, a location mere minutes away from the Walmart in El Paso that faced a deadly mass shooting in 2019.

An off duty police officer on site reached the first suspect within 3 minutes of the first shot, who was successfully apprehended. There have not been any reports released describing how the second suspect was taken into custody.

The four people who were shot were all male. Two were taken to the University Medical Center of El Paso in critical condition. The third injured person was also hospitalized, but his condition is unknown.

The nearby shooting that occurred in 2019 killed 23 and injured over two dozen others. The gunman, who was 24, pleaded guilty to approximately 90 federal charges earlier this week.

This year alone, there have been over 70 mass shootings, which are defined as a shooting that injures or kills over four people excluding the gunman. For many in the community this incident resurfaced old memories of the previous shooting.

Police Sergeant Robert Gomez stated “I was working (at the mall) the last time this happened with the Walmart shooting so it just brought back bad memories.”

Gomez also stated that the mall was “chaotic” and that there were people “running to the exit.”

The FBI has created a website for people to post images or videos of the incident as they continue the investigation. Authorities also set up a reunification center at a nearby high school for people affected by the mass shooting.
