As the school population continues to increase, space inside the school must also increase to hold all the students and staff. Actually no, new space is quickly developing outside the building.
Outside by the kiss and ride area, three large trailers were placed to accommodate next year’s increasing student body. Recent renovations were made to accommodate larger amounts of students. However, it seems that the renovations were not sufficient. Because of recent redistricting more and more students are zoned to South Lakes.
Before South Lakes was renovated it had over 10 trailers. On the flag pole side trailers lined the lawn and there were several other down at the parking lot by the tennis courts. The renovations to this school were made to remove the trailers and make South Lakes look more appealing.
Now we have trailers again.
“We requested the trailers because our school and most other schools in this part of Virginia have been increasing in population more than we expected,” said Principal Bruce Butler. “The extra space will make it so that next year teachers can travel less and gives more flexibility.”
Next year the classes moving into the trailers are German, Latin, and Spanish language classes.
“You may need a passport to get to your language class,” said Alison Schreck.
Our irritation with the addition of the trailers is that they destroy the appearance of the school. The area where our parents come to pick us up is now missing a large patch of grass and three unattractive structures now sit on what used to be a nice lawn. We understand that this is a necessary action but it is messing with the look of our school.
Other schools need to renovate there buildings to make them more capacious.
If our county continues to grow as it is now and predictions for how many students to come continue to show such inaccuracy, it is likely that a few more trailers will roll into the campus of South Lakes.
