In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we thank the many deserving people at our school whose contributions go unnoticed or are underappreciated.
First and foremost, thank you to Kim Retzer, our first year principal and first time mother in January. Her commitment to our school while being pregnant was admirable and we value her spirit.
We also appreciate Dave Rumberger, our interim principal, for maintaining structure during Retzer’s maternity leave. Though new to the Seahawk family he has done a great job of getting to know teachers and students and losing his stranger status.
Another important part of our school is our clubs. We applaud the students and new sponsors of the clubs that have been formed during this school year, including the Young Republicans Club, which provides a platform for vocalizing the Republican voice at our school—not dominant, but still present.
More new clubs to commend are the Baking Club, Humanity Plus, Investment Club, and the recently formed Theory of Quidditch Club, for providing outlets for service, learning, and interests outside of school itself.
We recognize our leadership class for actively organizing a fun and engaging winter pep rally in January which provided for some healthy teacher-student rivalry.
Also in that realm of our school, we thank our dedicated SGA Executive Council for always informing us of the daily announcements, sometimes to the dismay of our teachers, but still keeping us informed. Of course, we express our appreciation for Ms. Knapp and all those in the front office who always address visitors and late birds alike with smiles and clear enthusiasm.
Of course, congratulations are in order for the indoor track and field teams, both of which won convincingly at districts and already have state qualifiers.
More cheers for the girls varsity basketball team that continues to dominate the Liberty District. In particular, we would like to commend Christy Winter-Scott, for juggling many roles including coaching, professional commentating, and motherhood, yet remaining fully committed to her alma mater’s team.
In addition to varsity sports, it is important to recognize the successes of the junior varsity and freshman winter sports teams, including the boys and girls JV and freshman basketball teams.
All teams are at or over five hundred and the members of the teams are gaining valuable experience that will help them as they advance to the highly competitive varsity teams in future years.
We also commend Mr. Astudillo for taking the position of varsity girls soccer coach and getting the season off to a great start.
All of these Seahawks deserve the utmost thanks for their actions to enhance our school environment all hours of the day and their dedication to South Lakes.
