This year, South Lakes acquired a new addition of trailers to house the foreign language department. SGA members made sure that the trailers were pleasing to the eye.
The trailers were placed outside by the kiss and ride area. The trailers have become necessary due to the increase in the student body.
Many people thought that trailers would take away from the beauty of the school, so the leadership class and SGA took action.
“We started the mural project to make sure the outside of the school represents the beauty and enthusiasm within,” said senior Emily Lopynski. “Also, the rest of the school looks so nice and we didn’t want the trailers to ruin that. It’s about having pride in how our school looks.”
The art on the trailers was created to symbolize the languages that are taught inside of them. Shown on the trailer, lining the bottom are flags, symbols, and letters. The paint was donated by Principal Bruce Butler.
Students who volunteered met for four hours each day over the summer. After about ten meetings the final design was complete.
In order to paint the mural on the trailers, Butler had to approve the idea. IB art student senior Angelica Pettingell designed the mural for the outside of the trailers. She, along with many other volunteers, helped prime and sketch the design.
So far, everyone has had a different opinion on how the trailers look after they were completed.
“They make our school look like an elementary school,” said sophomore Maddy Papile.
“The final design strayed away a little from the original, but looks awesome,” said Lopynski.
