On September 1 the Class of 2015 came to South Lakes for freshman orientation.
Assistant principal of the Class of 2015 Lindsey Trout and leadership teacher Mike Astudillo welcomed the freshmen to the assembly and provided information that will prepare them for the next four years.
“I was nervous,” said freshman Ebony Mitchell. “The school is so big, but after orientation I [found] my way around the school.”
Other students were looking forward to the prospect of high school and a future at South Lakes.
“I’m looking forward to learning a lot,” said freshman Matt Crump. “High school will make me a bigger person and the one I’ll become in the future.”
Many of the new students voiced eagerness to join high school sports and other extracurricular activities.
“I’m looking forward to seeing all my friends again,” said freshman Karlee Parker. “I want to get good grades and I’m planning to play softball.”
Freshman Sweetlove Rays is looking forward to spirit weeks and pep rallies that come with the high school spirit.
“To me they seem to be the highlight of the year,” said Rays.
The objective of every year’s orientation is to help students adjust to the school surroundings and navigate the hallways around the school before classes actually start. This helps new students to become familiar with the school before upperclassman arrive and reduces tardies.
In case students get lost or need help, mentors were invited to the orientation to guide students.
“They’ll have a fun time,” said junior mentor Mary Severin. “We won’t eat them, they might get lost, but they’ll be fine and we’ll help them.”
