Which Chanel are you?

On September 22, Scream Queens had its two-hour premiere on Fox. The first season is centered on a series of murders involving the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority. The cast includes Emma Roberts, who plays Chanel Oberlin, the main character, and leader of The Chanels. Other cast members includes Lea Michele, Keke Palmer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Abigail Breslin, Nick Jonas, and Ariana Grande, just to name a few. Scream Queens shares creator Ryan Murphy with American Horror Story and Glee.

Many people are excited about this show because Jamie Lee Curtis starred in one of the most classic horror films Halloween. Scream Queens is not only a show that encompasses horror, but also comedy. For example, (spoiler alert!) Chanel #2 (Ariana Grande) is murdered by the red devil in the first episode. In this scene, Grande exchanges text messages with her killer, before tweeting about her imminent death.

The main plotline includes a killer who wears a red devil costume and unleashes an evil scheme after the anti-Kappa college Dean, Munsch made a school announcement regarding sororities. This announcement stated that sororities are now open for all students, not just for girls who belong to the “elite and socialites” circle. The show does not only have alarming scenes, but also focuses on the roles perpetrated in today’s society. It depicts people’s struggles and frustrations of trying to fit in.  Not everyone is who they seem.

As the show moves forward, it will strip away the facades people put on to fit into society and expose “what people really are, which is inherently dark, inherently unhappy and frustrated human beings who are trying so desperately to hold it together,” says Curtis. “Everything that you think about every single one of these characters, you don’t know sh– about anything because everyone here is wearing masks and this show peels off masks each week and it’s brilliant.”

Even the show’s stars  are left oblivious to whether they’ll live through the season. “We are reading these scripts every week blind,” says Curtis in an interview with TV Guide. “So you also have this interesting dynamic, which is, if we’re all still in an episode, that you’re kind of bonded together as the survivors … There’s also a little bit of this self-preservation. And so it’s kind of a funny dynamic to have a sorority house doing that and a group of actresses doing that.”

The next episode airs on Tuesday, October 6th at 9:00 PM on Fox.
