Seahawk alumni connect through Duke basketball

This year’s young Duke
University lineup defeated the University of Wisconsin-Madison team 68-63 during the National Championship game April 6 hosted at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianaplis, Indiana.
This year’s Duke lineup had three freshman starters but was able to advance far into the postseason despite their lack of experience.
South Lakes alumnus Grant Hill played his college basketball for the Blue Devils all four years which included back-to-back National Championships.
Hill was born in Dallas, Texas where his father Calvin Hill played for the Dallas
Cowboys and later, the
Washington Redskins.
South Lakes alumnus Moe
Pharaoh followed in the footsteps of hill last year when he decided to go from seahawk to bluedevil. Pharaoh took part in many Duke games throughout the year and even attended the final
championship match.
After the game Pharaoh and Hill shared a moment in
celebration with a storybook
picture to capture the moment.
Once the game concluded, Hill was asked by ESPN’s Rachel
Nichols to compare his
championship team in 1992 with this years Duke “This is a team of character not characters,” Hill said. “These guys fought hard all season and bought in to Coach K and they all bought into one another. They proved that they are the best team and they have that recipe for success.”
Comparing this year’s Duke lineup with the 1991-92 team can be difficult although the talent and legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski were present Hill’s lineup had more experience and not to mention hated but extremely talented big man
Christian Laettner.
Freshman Guard Tyus Jones won the MVP award after
finishing with 23 points and
arguably finished off Wisconsin in the closing minutes of the game.
Hill grew up in Reston, Virginia and made the South Lakes Varsity basketball team as a freshman.
