On Track to Win

There are over one hundred students participating in the indoor track and field program at South Lakes. “About 30 kids from our school competed,” said by Ali Gilbert, sophomore from the team. “Many kids compete in more than one event, which shows the talents and skills the people on the team have.”

South Lakes indoor track and field season has begun and the results are coming in from their first meet at the Thomas Jefferson community center. There are four main events that students compete in at the track meets. There is short distance running, long distance running, throwing, and pole vault. All of these events are overseen by head coach, Scott Raczko, and assistant coach Moise Joseph.

Many kids on the team have stuck with the sport for many years. “I would say there are differences between the years, like any sport you have people who leave and new people coming in,” said Ronak Cuthill, senior about his team. “I have been doing track since my freshman year with one year off due to an injury but for sure there have been changes on the team and it is nice to see how we [the team] adjust to the changes.”

Kaitlyn Morris, a sophomore who competes for the 1000 meter race won first place at the last meet. “We are always proud of our athletes and all their accomplishments,” said Coach Schuler, assistant coach for distance running on the team.
