The 2024 sensation “Wicked,” is set to release a sequel “Wicked For Good,” in November of this year. The original movie grossed $164 million in its opening week despite its lengthy two hour and 45 minute run time. The sequel is projected to gross $140 million.
The franchise superstar made partnerships with a plethora of brands including Stanley, Target, and Crocs, expanding their consumer base. Most notably, the “Wicked” Stanleys flew off the shelves and left fans everywhere fighting for their own.
Sensations Ariana Grande and Cynthia Arivo elevated the popularity of the movie, encouraging a younger audience to attend. Devoted Grande fans are lining the theaters and buying the pre-sale tickets for the highly anticipated sequel.
The sequel picks up where the original left off, exploring Elphaba’s journey as a fugitive and Glinda’s journey as a public figure as Madame Morable, played by Michelle Yeoh, manipulates Glinda and distorts her public image, making her a symbol of purity.
The film combines the theatric expression of costumes, set design, and music to make progressive commentary on animal rights and classism in such an important time.
Although this is the second installment of the two part story of “Wicked,” ending the original plot-line of the musical, it will not be the last addition to the franchise as a whole. Directors claim that the first and second movies are made to flesh out the characters without cutting songs, setting the stage for more exploratory projects.
This sets up the studio to produce more movies underneath the “Wicked” umbrella without undercutting the original plot-line of the “Wicked” musical.
