88 year-old Pope Francis, born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away Monday, April 21st. He died in his residence at the Domus Sanctae Marthae in Vatican City, following a stroke and subsequent heart failure. His death occurred just one day after Easter Sunday, when he made his last public appearance in St. Peter’s Basilica, marking a 12-year end to his papacy. Elected as the 266th pope on March 13th, 2013, Pope Francis was the first Latin American pontiff. His tenure has been characterized by a focus on social justice, environmental advocacy, and efforts to modernize the Church.
He made his last and only visit to the United States in September 2015, and was greeted by Former President Barack Obama at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Francis addressed a joint session of Congress and paid a visit to the United Nations, advocating for action on issues such as climate change and poverty.

Tens of thousands attended Francis’ funeral, including President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. According to the Vatican, Francis was laid to rest at the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. His will requested an undecorated tomb with the only inscription “Franciscus.”
During the interregnum, the period between papacies, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo, assumed temporary leadership of the Church. He was responsible for overseeing funeral arrangements and preparing for the conclave to elect a new pope. Pope Leo XIV assumed the role after election by the conclave in early May.
