Reston Town Center (RTC) is expanding, a plan to further develop the area between RTC and the Wiehle-Reston Metro Station has been approved. This approval is a part of a larger project named Reston Town Center NXT.
The development of RTC NXT aims to connect the town center to the silver line metro station. In total, 4 million square feet of land is being developed. The majority of land is designated for office space and housing, with retail space taking up the least amount of space.
“The Application achieves…a premier gateway into Reston Town Center, fully utilizing the investment of the Metrorail Silver Line extension,” Mark Looney, a representative for Boston properties (BXP) said.
BXP is leading the development of the project. Original plans for the development were approved in 2018, and recently, an updated plan for phase two has been approved by Fairfax County’s planning commission. This revision will increase the amount of office space to 930,000 square feet.
The development is split up into two phases. In phase one of the project, two office spaces were built for Volkswagen and Fannie Mae. A hotel and apartment building as well as retail spaces were also built.
In phase two of the project, 33 acres will be added to the town center. This will include four office buildings, two residential buildings, and one public facility. The public facility will be a performing arts center. Three public green spaces will also be added.
“The variety of uses within the community will offer a vibrant, 18-hour environment that is both a destination, home, and gateway to Reston,” Loony added.
