The Cincinnati Bengals are facing early offseason problems as both of their top 2025 draft picks, first rounder Amarius Mims and second rounder Shemar Stewart, are refusing to participate in any team activities due to dissatisfaction with their rookie contracts.
Amarius Mims, an offensive tackle out of the University of Georgia taken 18th overall, has yet to take part in any team practices or workouts with the Bengals. Mims, along with his representatives, claim that the rookie is frustrated over the lack of protections within the contract, especially when it comes to guaranteed money.
Similarly, second round pick Shemar Stewart has followed in his footsteps, refusing to join team drills or media appearances, reportedly due to similar contract issues. Stewart, a highly regarded pass rusher from Miami, has been vocal about the Bengals and their reluctance to offer guarantees that were offered to the Texans 2nd round pick.
This isn’t the 1st time that Cincinnati has found itself in this situation. The Bengals are known for being historically “cheap” and slow to fully guarantee portions of rookie deals. That approach seems to be a problem with this year’s top rookies.
Head coach Zac Taylor remained silent about the situation, stating “We’re focused on the players who are here.”
The standoff may continue into training camp if the Bengals don’t move closer to the standard contract being offered across other teams within the NFL. For a franchise looking to return to playoff contention, getting their top draft talent into uniform should be a top priority.
Until then, the Bengals are left with an extremely important stalemate that is casting a huge shadow over their off season.
