Wearing the same socks every game could be considered good luck. Many athletes take superstitions very seriously and believe they can affect the way they perform. Superstitions can be anything from wearing the same socks or eating a certain meal before games. Let’s find out what superstitions Seahawk athletes have.
Ava-Grace Satterfield runs track for the school, and the night before a race she eats pasta so that she doesn’t get hungry when she runs the next day. Another thing she does is wear the same outfit and socks every race. This is a common superstition among athletes. Lastly, right before she races she prays and jumps to get the nerves out. Caiden Williams, a Junior on the girls Volleyball team said “I have to put on aquaphor before a game.”
Sam Janow is a senior on the baseball team. When we asked him about his superstitions he told us that he has to wear sunglasses during games. He also told us that they can’t cross their bats because it is considered bad luck. Another senior that we interviewed, Logan Legler, on the lacrosse team. His superstition is that he doesn’t warm up before games because it makes him too tired.
Some superstitions are more team based instead of individual and can be passed down over the years. Mithra Venkatesan gave us insight into the cheerleading teams superstition by telling us that they can’t split the pole the day of a competition, until after they compete. Henry Strickland, a junior on the football team, told us that bus rides to away games are silent, and they say the football prayer before running out of the tunnel at home games.
Professional athletes have superstitions as well. Michael Jordan always wore his college shorts underneath his NBA shorts during games. Another Professional athlete that has a superstition is Tiger Woods. He always wears a red shirt during the final round of tournaments.
Superstitions range from a wide variety of levels among athletes from professional to high school students, but are equally as important.
