Firefighters were called to attend to a minor chemical spill that occured this morning in the science work room. Firetrucks left the scene around 9:30 a.m.

This morning, a major traffic jam on South Lakes Drive called attention to an incident on the student parking lot side of the building, where several fire trucks had gathered due to a chemical spill.

“There was a minor chemical spill in the science work room,” front office secretary Elizabeth Knapp said. “There are guidelines about what the protocol is, they notify the fire department and hazardous materials department.’

The science work room overlooks the student parking lot. Students were unable to park their cars due to the blockade created by the fire trucks as firefighters attempted to eradicate the situation.

The junior and senior sub schools, which border the chemistry department, are currently closed off.

“There is an emphasis on keeping the building safe,” Knapp said. “As far as we know, no students were exposed and we’re monitoring it from every level in terms of student and staff safety.”

Currently, students are being held in their second period classes.
