Senior leadership students are striving to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving.

The campaign is fueled by concern for Seahawks’ safety.

“We went to help save people from getting into car accidents,” senior executive council member Kacey Hirshfeld said. “It’s so dangerous, but we don’t always think about it because we’re glued to our phones.”

This week, statistics about distracted driving were read over the morning announcements and a wrecked car donated by Henry’s Wrecker Service was on display next to the student parking lot.

The car will be removed this afternoon, but the leadership class plans to put a permanent warning in the parking lot.

“We are getting a metal sign that will be put up in the student parking lot as a reminder to kids not to text and drive,” senior leadership student Julia Pascal said.

Students have shown their support by placing their thumb prints on a pledge to refrain from texting while operating a motor vehicle.

“Lots of people have been taking the pledge so that has been a good sign so far,” senior leadership student Perez said.

Like Perez, Pascal is pleased by the student body’s response.

“The project has been going well so far,” Pascal said. “We have been receiving positive feedback.”
