Guest commentary: South Lakes-why we are the best

South Lakes is, bar none, one of the best public high schools in the country for a variety of reasons. I am fortunate enough to have been part of many of South Lakes` traditions and activities during and even before my entry into school. Students, faculty, or guests are always welcomed by the positive atmosphere within it. I would like to share five aspects of South Lakes, which make it stand out from other high schools as well as provide tips that will enhance students` experiences.

The Facility

After our renovation several years ago, the school underwent a transformation resulting in one of the most technologically up to date schools in Fairfax County. With a redesigned cafeteria and gym, numerous advancements in technology, and new turf fields, South Lakes has become a prime example of the perfect high school.

The Opportunities

Students are able to take part in over 20 sports, over 70 clubs, and a multitude of classes. Students participate in numerous field trips, community related events, and activities throughout the year.

The Faculty and Staff

The faculty and staff here are exceptional. The immense diversity both culturally and intellectually has a profound impact on students` academic and social experiences. Teachers from all walks of life fill this school with rich teaching styles and personalities. The familiar faces we see and the names we hear of our beloved teachers and staff are the reasons why we go back to see them in following years.

The Students

The same can be said for the students as was for the faculty. With over 50 countries represented and dozens of languages spoken, South Lakes is a great representation of the diverse community in which we all live. With this diversity, students learn and appreciate each other on a much deeper level. This is supplemented with the IB program`s worldly based teaching style

Get to know everyone around you. South Lakes is not cliquey nor does it have the stereotypes seen in Mean Girls. Everyone is family and we all get along (most of the time). Do not be afraid to extend yourself to other people. Chances are everyone else is trying to do the same thing too.

The Hype

Hype Squad: a term synonymous with South Lakes, shows an intense level of spirit that defines our school. We don’t play around when it comes to sports, homecomings, or spirit weeks. We put on a show at every single game and represent our school in a positive way. Our school spirit brings us closer together and allows us to come on top with victories over Herndon and other schools as well.

Get involved and take advantage of the many resources and opportunities available to you. Within these activities you are not only doing things you enjoy, but also meeting and socializing with new people who have similar interests. You are also building lifelong friendships and memories that will stay with you forever.
