Should Thanksgiving Break be a week long?

Should Thanksgiving Break be a week long?

From November 22 to November 24, students have school off for Thanksgiving Break, which includes the day before, after, and the weekend of Thanksgiving. This also includes Black Friday. However, many students feel that the break should last for the whole week instead

Freshman Anya Crevits believes the break should be extended because “in my opinion having these two extra days are unnecessary.” She also says it’s especially useless, and points out that students learn new topics before the break and then are expected to remember at the end of the five day break. She believes that it is better to “learn after the break so you can retain all the information.”

Despite not celebrating Thanksgiving, freshman Zahra Nikzad says the whole week should be off. She believes that “it’s tiring coming to school for just two days” and points out that having two days can mess up plans, whether it be traveling or having family come over.

Many people are out traveling and are missing out on lessons that are being taught and may be forgotten by many students over the break. Students have constantly been complaining that the two days before were unnecessary and do not benefit students.

Students are also worried about tests the week after the break. Crevits says she has a biology test the following week. “In a way, I feel like it’s a short unit and it gives me stress that now I have to study for something over my break so I’m prepared, but in another way, if we did something our test was going to be about, it could have helped me.” Crevits says they did a lab prior to the break rather than a review, which she feels could have been more helpful than a lab.

One freshman, Kass Harmon, traveled over the week, including the two days of school. However, she is not worried about missing school because she is having a great time and school is the least of her worries. She believes “the teachers will not be going over important stuff if they only have the students once out of the two day week,” which leads to her argument that since she believes that they wouldn’t feel the need to teach important things, there is no need for the two extra days.

It appears that the majority of students believe that the break should be longer, not just because of the time off but because of the disadvantages the two days has for the students, such as being able to remember new information and how it can ruin plans, and many hope to see the break being longer next year.
