The volleyball teams of South Lakes and Herndon are having a friendly competition to raise money for the Dig Pink fundraiser.

This is the South Lakes volleyball team’s fifth year sponsoring the Dig Pink fundraiser that brings attention and awareness to breast cancer. To help raise more money, Seahawks volleyball coach Cheri Hostetler and Hornets volleyball coach Rebecca Waters decided to have a competition to raise more money. The team who raises the most money receives a large pink trophy.

“Being able to beat Herndon will help raise us more money,” sophomore Vela McBride said. “This is also a fun and good chance to raise money for a good cause in a helpful way.”

As a team, they are looking forward to raise $2,500 by selling pink paper ribbons for $5, doing a Tropical Smoothie fundraiser and doing bake sales. The fundraiser held at Tropical Smoothie will be on Oct. 5 at Plaza America. Bake sales were scheduled after school on Oct. 1 and Oct. 3.

“So far we have raised a few hundred dollars,” freshman Rachel Abelson said. “It has been fun working as a team for a good cause. I believe that we will win and I hope that everyone will come out and support all three volleyball teams and our fundraiser.”

Everyone on the volleyball team has responsibilities in order to raise more money, but senior captain Caitlin Ferzoco has a few more responsibilities than her teammates.

“I make sure the chemistry in our team stays positive,” Ferzoco said. “I have all the responsibilities that my teammates have such as being punctual, a hard worker, and a good teammate. I’m also in charge of making sure the team is organized and where they need to be and when they need to be for fundraising events.”

Although the team only raised a few hundred dollars, some of the players believe that they have the potential to win.

“Our team is a special team,” sophomore Melody Caloyannides said. “We are all so close and more bonded than most teams should be. A tense game, like the Herndon game, is a game where we care about winning more than worrying about anything else. I think and hope we will win and it will be a great game to see us play to our full potential.”
