Last Friday, January 12, South Lakes Basketball took on rivals the Herndon Hornets in a doubleheader. The girls lost by one point, with a score of 43-44, while the boys won by 14 with a score of 61-47.

The girls’ game was very intense, as they were up by 12 going into the fourth quarter, however, while they tried hard, they were not able to pull out a win. Sophomore Margo Somer describes her own interpretation of the game, “We had a really good start to the game, and we were winning like 15-3 at the end of the first quarter. We kept the lead and our halftime talk was mostly about keeping up our energy for the next two quarters. We did that in the third quarter as we went into the fourth with a 16 point lead, but in the fourth quarter, we just stopped playing and just made bad turnovers. Also, our starting point guard, Tia, fouled out. Herndon came back and we cracked under pressure and lost.”

The boys’ game was also very interesting. The boys were tied after the first quarter and overtime managed to turn their tie into a large lead. Some highlights of the game were a dunk by Emmanuel Aghayere and the 23 points by Cameron Savage.

The boys are now 9-2 and will take on Langley High School at home this Friday. The girls are now 12-2 and will take on Langley High School this Friday at Langley.
