Speech and debate team members are looking forward to the Washington-Arlington Catholic Forensic League (WACFL) mega tournament Saturday, Dec. 14 at Lake Braddock Secondary School.

Generally, WACFL competitions are dedicated to one event. At the mega tournament, however, both speech and debate will compete throughout the day.

Debaters will compete in Lincoln-Douglas debate and public forum debate, while speech team members take part in individual events. These include declamation, dramatic performance, duo interpretation, extemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking, oral interpretation, and original oratory.

“I’m excited for it because I’ll be able to see a lot of kids that I don’t usually get to see, and I’ll get to practice my piece so that maybe I can make it to nationals this year,” senior Chiara Savauge said. “I’m not as nervous this time because I’ve already made it to metros [WACFL’s qualifying tournament for the National Catholic Forensic League national tournament], so it’s not so much of a competition as a practice.”

The tournament is so popular that registration for events was capped, with students earning the right to compete on a first come, first serve basis.
