Students compete in annual Science Fair

South Lakes held its annual science fair on January 28 from 5-9:30 p.m. Each project that made it to the science fair was a winner in the class competition. Only about 1/3 of each class’s projects were entered in the science fair.

There were 220 projects set up in the cafeteria and auxiliary gym by students participating in the science fair. Principle Kim Retzer, Assistant Principal Dana Walker, and IB Coordinator Marie Turner were a few of the many South Lakes administrators who attended the science fair. South Lakes has been having science fairs for over 11 years.

For the first part of the fair, family and friends viewed the projects. Then the Lego Movie was played for the students to watch while the judges judged each project. Afterwards the award ceremony was held in the little theatre.

“This year’s science fair was a great success. The judges were very impressed by the quality of entries this year,” science teacher Katherine Offult said. “This is the first year that there were a number of winners from Animal Sciences.”

The Regional Science Fair will be held at Robinson Secondary School from March 20-22. There were 22 entries selected to compete in the fair. They earned the highest average score from three judges out of the 120 total judges, members of the Reston community.

“For a student to succeed at Science Fair, he or she needs to have an innovative question that he is researching, collect a lot of data, and analyze and present the results well–both on his board and when he is talking with the judges,” science teacher Katherine Offult said.
