Normally I do not talk about sports, especially football, but I felt like this needed some attention.
Once again, controversy has come up about the Washington Redskins’ name and mascot. An ongoing debate that has spanned the past 20 years, has resurfaced this weekend after the National Museum of the American Indian held a day long conference on racist stereotypes.
So should they change their name and mascot? While yes, it is discriminatory, I do not particularly believe that it is that important that they change their name. Maybe instead of complaining about a sports team’s name, we actually do something to rectify the atrocities that we have been committed against the Native American population in this country before we move on to complaining about a sports team.
Just some food for thought.
