Greer Smith is the sports editor for the High Point Enterprise, a local newspaper in High Point, North Carolina.
Smith began his writing in his Winston Salem high school when he covered high school sports games. While his school did not have a formal newspaper, his work was published in a booklet by his school.
At North Carolina State University Smith majored in English. While he was there, he worked for the student newspaper.
His first break into the journalism business came when he returned home after college where he began working for a weekly newspaper.
“After I worked for the weekly I began working for a company that did public relations for some of the NASCAR races around Winston Salem and North Wilkesboro,” Smith said. “They also had a racing publication which I mainly worked for.”
He spent the majority of his time covering NASCAR races which drew attention in the NASCAR hotbed of Winston Salem.
“The company was owned by a well-respected former sports editor for the Winston Salem Journal named Hank Schoolfield,” Smith said. “I worked for them for a little over twenty years until I took the Motorsports Beat at the Enterprise.”
Smith covered NASCAR and other motorsports for several years until the downsizing of his paper caused him to switch positions to become a sports writer.
“Our staff was reduced from seven people to three,” Smith said. “Now I do a little bit of everything, coverage of almost every NASCAR event on the eastern coast, most of the college sports in the area, home games for the Carolina Panthers, any PGA event in Greensboro and Charlotte, and occasionally some high school sports.”
