.) Head to the Russell County Fair and Horse Show in Castlewood, Virginia! Music will be provided by singer and songwriter Jonny Diaz. Enjoy the different horse and sheep shows. Win cash prizes and get some ‘que from their on-site food truck, Smoke Wagon BBQ. Drop by the General Store and pick up some cute t-shirts, mugs, jewelry, aprons, rain ponchos, and other snazzy souvenirs. Most importantly, have fun on the carnival rides!

.) You’ll be swinging at the Rosslyn Jazz Festival in Arlington, Virginia! All the hips cats won’t want to miss the live jazz music. Featured artists will include Joe Keyes & the Late Bloomer Band, The Soul Rebels, Lee Fields & The Expressions, and Xenia Rubinos. Take advantage of discounts at local restaurants – places like Kona Grill, Pancho Villa, and Bistro 360. Try the food trucks – Tacos Matadores will be there, along with Mangia Tutti, Tapas Truck, and several others.

.) Partake in the Paint the Town 5K in Martinsville, Virginia! Bring a towel and claim your white t-shirt before you begin the race. During your run down the Indian Trail, your t-shirt (or “blank canvas,” rather) will be transformed into a real work of art by volunteers when they shower you with colored cornstarch. There will be a DJ, and you’ll receive lunch (and a swag bag) afterwards. Don your shirt proudly; you’re supporting a good cause! Money raised during the 5K will go towards CHILL, a teen leadership group that seeks to make communities safe and drug-free.

.) Visit Woodbine Farm in Strasburg, Virginia! Like any great farm, they have lots of goodies (jam, breads, cookies, pies, scones, honey, butters, and fresh veggies). Get BBQ from the on-site food truck and hang out at the picnic shelter while you chow down. Keep little siblings entertained on the playground equipment. Family pets are welcome as well! While you make your way around the farm grounds, Fido can have some quality time with the other pooches in the play area designated for pets.

There will be a Big Ugly Truck DJ Dance Party (’cause no party’s complete without One highlight of the festival is The Uncle Devin Show, as well as the popular youth breakdancing group The Lab and juggler Christian Kloc. Muralists and other sorts of visual artists will also be present. See the Right to the City exhibit and meet with neighborhood activists, or go on a walking tour to find out more about the area’s Latino history. Have a blast at the Family Fun Zone complete with soccer, flag football, Jenga, and Connect Four (plus crafts and face painting for the little ones). Let me just say, you won’t be disappointed!
