PTSA and Academic Boosters debuted a new honor roll breakfast to celebrate student success during the second quarter Wed., Feb. 26.

The previous breakfast allowed Seahawk families to donate breakfast items and treats such as fruit, donuts, muffins, and beverages. The cafeteria was set up as an all-you-can-eat buffet during one-half of Seahawk Seminar, so students were able to miss class time, but could not transport food outside the cafeteria.

In response to the increased number of students who made the honor roll, which surpassed 850 students according to the South Lakes PTSA website, the Academic Boosters altered the breakfast.

The PTSA asked for food items such as Sun Chips bags, lollipops, and small juice boxes that were placed in paper lunch bags and distributed to each student.

Students then promptly returned to class with food in hand.

Some Seahawks disapprove of the change because of its brevity. Students had a twenty-minute window to go to the auxillary gym to pick up their bags before the school day began at 7:20 a.m.

“The food selection was decent,” senior Sunny Gutpa said. “But, I didn’t get to miss class time like the old breakfast. I missed being able to interact with friends for a period of time outside the classroom.”

Other Seahawks did not mind the new breakfast configuration, but still preferred the buffet-style breakfast.

“I liked it because there was a variety of food and I was able to take the food with me back to class,” senior Zack McIntyre said. “I still missed the old breakfast because I was able to miss class time and I liked the donuts.
