Boys basketball begins playoffs tonight with a tough matchup on the road. The sixth seeded Seahawks will travel to third seed Fairfax and face one of the best scoring duos in the district.
Fairfax’s leading scorer Zack Burnett (16.4ppg) was held to seven and ten points the last two times the teams met with South Lakes, gaining the upper hand both times. John Robic (14.8ppg) scored eighteen points against the Seahawks on Jan. 4 when Fairfax lost on the road by four.
South Lakes is led by sophomore guard Brandon Kamga (17.6ppg) and junior guard Dre Puryear (7.3ppg) who have led the team to three wins over the last five games. The Seahawks have also called up sophomore guard Grant Chustz and junior big men Joseph Kidane and Derek Phillips from JV to assist with the playoff games, which follow the calling up of sophomore point guard Zach Pearl last month.
This game will be a tough matchup with the focus mainly being on guard play. The previous results prove no indication of how this game will turn out. Fairfax will not take advantage of home court and have only a five and five record at home, including a loss against the Seahawks two weeks ago. South Lakes will have to contain the scoring duo of Burnett and Robic to guarantee a victory and move on to the semi-finals and finals.
Other first round matchups include (8) Thomas Jefferson at (1) Langley, (7) James Madison at (2) Marshall, and (5) Stonebridge at (4) McLean. Semi-finals will be played on Wednesday at South Lakes with the Finals being played on Friday night.
