Social networking sites have increased in mass and population during the past decade. Only 30 years ago, the Internet did not exist.
Now, it takes less than a minute to connect to the web.
Ever since the creation of the Internet, people’s lives have changed dramatically. You can find almost anything on the Internet these days.
“I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t use Google,” said junior Christie Parvin. “We take so much for granted, but we are so lucky.”
Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and even the more outdated sites such as MySpace, help people to communicate in situations where they might have not been able to before.
“I think social media is a good way of communication,” said junior Sherly Angeli. “By using Facebook, Twitter, and other medias we learn to be more social and to stay in touch with people we can’t see every day or from other places. Though sometimes we use it for dumb stuff, it helps us with our everyday lives.”
Even adults are joining the bandwagon. Spanish teacher Marly Fullerton uses Facebook to connect with her former student’s years after they have graduated.
“I post things to keep in touch,” said Fullerton. “I wish them happy holidays and on their birthday I say ‘happy birthday,’ too.”
Another idea of social media has come into play in recent years.
Blogging has become very popular and sites such as Tumblr and Blogspot encourage students to express themselves through a more artistic approach.
“I don’t have a Tumblr but I really enjoy looking at other people’s,” said Parvin. “I’ve recently got into Twitter though.”
“It’s just wonderful to see how can do things in just minutes unlike past generations that spent a long time trying to communicate,” said senior Jairo Edilson.
To see how far technology has come, it is interesting to see where social media is heading next.
“[Social media] has come a long way from just a place to communicate with friends,” said senior Fiona Hagengimana. “I think that [in the future] everyone will have a voice.”
