Reston Community Center will host a celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 19-20. The event will include a musical tribute, a keynote address, a commemorative march, and more activities for people of all ages.
The celebration will kick off this Saturday with community service projects and a volunteer lunch at the Southgate Community Center. There are various projects to participate on that are listed on the Reston Community Center’s website. This project will begin at 9 a.m. Also on Saturday will be a 90 minute musical tribute by the Reston Community Orchestra at 4 p.m. at the Reston Community Center featuring the music of Reston resident Brian Scarbrough and vocalist Beverly Cosham.
There will be a keynote address by Julian Bond and community lunch from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Reston Community Center. Julian Bond was the first black US vice presidential nominee and former Chairman of the NAACP. During the keynote address there will also be a series of activities for children in 1st-6th grade based on the history of the civil rights movement. This “Especially for Youth” program will also be at the Reston Community Center from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
A commemorative march will begin at 3:15 p.m. at Lake Anne Plaza and will end at the Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation. The weekend’s events will conclude with the 23rd anniversary program honoring Martin Luther King “Voices of Inspiration” will then start at the Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation at 4 p.m.
All events are free. Registration is required for the Keynote Address and the “Especially for Youth” activity and attendance is limited to those who register prior to the event.
