Karen Goff has been writing for 27 years. She always liked to write and when she was a teenager, she became a big fan of the news, whether in print or on TV.
Being an editor does conflict with activities outside of work such as family events.
“I have regularly worked nights and weekends in addition to being available for breaking news.”
It is nice to be able to work from home.
“Working from home is a huge benefit, it gives me more time with family.”
Goff is married to someone in the journalism business.
“Twenty years ago I married someone in the news business. My husband is a sports reporter for the Washington Post, and he works an even more unusual schedule than I do.”
The unusual schedule is not for everyone.
“I think it does drive some people out of the news business after a while, but it works for me.”
The job does have its benefits. Goff gets to meet new people, travel to different places, and do some unusual unique things.
“No two days are the same.”
Goff would never go to jail to protect a source and she has never been in trouble for publishing something to personal.
“I believe some stuff is too dangerous to print.” Karen Goff said. “News publications have to have standards; something needlessly cruel or embarrassing should not be published.
Goff likes writing for the Reston Patch.
“I like covering the community in which I have lived for 15 years.”
