Many students here at South Lakes are turning 18 or have already turned 18, which means that they are officially adults! Along with the abundance of opportunities that come with this, they also gain the right to vote. Voting might be a little intimidating for the first time, but here in Virginia, the process is designed to be flexible and accessible.
One of the first chances to vote is coming up fast! Virginia is holding a special election on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, where voters will be able to decide on a constitutional amendment about redistricting. Now is the time to make sure your voice is heard on issues that will make an impact.
Whether you vote in the April special election, the August primary elections, or the November general election, here is a guide to voting in Virginia:
- Register to vote: You cannot vote without being registered which is why it is crucial to register. If you are currently 17 but will be 18 by the next general election, you are able to register to vote in any primary or special election
- The easiest way to register is online at ​​https://vote.elections.virginia.gov/VoterInformation. All you need is a Virginia drivers license or state identification and your social security number.
- You will have to register at least 11 days before the election to be able to vote. Virginia also offers same-day registration, so you can register and vote in person at your local polling place on election day. The vote would only be counted once the registration is verified.
- Cast your ballot: In Virginia, there are multiple ways to vote which makes it easier for everybody.
- You can vote early in person at the designated locations to beat the election day crowds. Early voting typically starts 45 days before an election and ends on the Saturday before Election Day.
- If you are not able to make the trip, you can request a mail-in ballot online. Once it is sent to you, make sure to return it ahead of the Friday before Election Day.
- You can also vote the traditional way, on Election Day anytime from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. at your polling place.
- What to bring: In Virginia, you are required to bring a form of identification such as a VA drivers license, VA student ID, U.S. passport, or even a current utility bill that displays your name and address.
- Do your homework: Come prepared by knowing what is on the ballot and know who or what you are voting for. You can also look up a sample ballot online so you will know what to expect.
