This month, I have picked out four albums that were released earlier this year. That of which I didn’t have a chance to review or passed up on the review because it was a continuation of one I had already reviewed before.
Here is the list of albums I have in store:
- Lil Yachty – ‘Lets Start Here.’
- Destroy Lonely – ‘If Looks Could Kill (Directors Cut)’
- Lil Uzi Vert – ‘Pink Tape’
- Drake – ‘For All The Dogs: Scary Hours Edition’ (Redux)
Today, however, let’s start here. (Pun Intended)
On January 27th, 2023, Lil Yachty shocked the world with a neo-psychedelic rock album. Yes, the same Lil Yachty that believed that a Cello was a woodwind instrument made a critically acclaimed psych-rock album. Which Rolling Stone put #3 on their Top 100 Best Albums of the year. A huge change from his usual self-proclaimed ‘Bubblegum Trap’ genre, Yachty drives clear influences from artists in this lane, with a similar sound to Tame Impala and Pink Floyd.
The introduction to this experience is ‘The BLACK Seminole,’ which in its own right is an absolutely beautiful track. A gorgeous start to the album transitions to ‘the ride~’ with Teezo Touchdown. Teezos’ part is a very well vocalized and perfectly written part in both verses that he delivers. ‘The ride~’s hi-hats and crisp synths transform effortlessly into the bass of the third track, ‘Running out of time.’ ‘pRETTy‘ is one of the weaker tracks on the album, but still filled with quality, as trills from Yachty ring on in the background. ‘WE SAW THE SUN!’ is an awesome track with the guitar remaining consistent, and excellent drumming in the background. Yachtys’ echoes are heavenly and overly wide-spread, making you feel almost as if you’re on a different planet. ‘WE SAW THE SUN!’ ends with a TV static transition in the next track, ‘Drive ME crazy!’ This song features a simplistic, but effective performance with some beautiful violins and background effects; while Yachty adds so much onto this track vocally.
After the amazing performance of ‘DRIVE ME CRAZY!’ Yachty keeps up his amazing run with the next track, ‘I’VE OFFICIALLY LOST ViSiON!!!!’ A beautiful, out of this world experience, has high trills in the background and a gorgeous guitar with a drumming performance that almost if not completely rivals the guitar. ‘Paint THE sky‘ is another weird outer space experience that transitions flawlessly into ‘sHould i B?’ That track sounds almost like a psych-rock and pop crossover that Yachty makes work perfectly. After that, ‘The Alchemist.‘ grants big synths and a build up that leads to a mellow background before the last track, ‘REACH THE SUNSHINE.’ Which is objectively weak until around the three minute mark with huge symbols and guitars, which then calms down with a piano. A great end to a beautiful album.
