Winter sports gear up for 2013-14 season

Varsity wrestling finished last season with a regional competition appearance and has set high expectations for this year. Senior Josh Forrest posted a 30-5 record and finished second in the Liberty District, as well as sixth in the regional tournament.

“We are looking to place high in the Conference Championship and send all our members to Regionals,” Forrest said.

In addition to success on the mat, senior Terry Petersen hopes that Hype Squad support increases.

“All of the seniors on the team, including me, have a goal to try and have more viewers at our home wrestling meets,” Petersen said.

The program is under the new leadership of Stephen Brown. Brown was at the helm of the Langley wrestling program when it won a district title in 2007.

Wrestling faces Mount Vernon and DeMatha in its first contest of the season Nov. 30.

Coming off a 4-9-1 season, varsity swim and dive hopes new talented members will propel the team to success.

Senior Matthew Hutchins thinks the program will improve this year, and hopes to do well in the Liberty Conference.

“We want to do really well in districts and be one of the top,” Hutchins said.

New freshmen swimmers are expected to make a splash.

“I think every year we hope for the best,” senior Cara Kalinowski said. “We have a lot of new, super competitive freshmen and they’ll make a great addition to the team and make up for the seniors that left.”

The first meet of the season is against Stone Bridge at Claude Moore Dec. 7.

While swim and dive hopes to improve, indoor track has set its sight defending its title as Liberty Conference, formerly Liberty District, champions.

“We work hard and are persistent to achieve our goals,” senior Kristin Tran said. “We have a conference now and we hope to win the conference.”

Indoor track competes against Madison and Fairfax in Alexandria Dec. 7 in its first competition of the season.

The gymnastics team also hopes to build off of last year’s success, which culminated with a second place finish in the Liberty District.

“Last year, we did better than we ever did and I hope we can continue that tradition,” senior Morgan Gerdon said.

Gymnastics first competition will take place at Fairfax High School against Marshall, Thomas Jefferson, Stuart, and McLean Dec. 14.
