Sports fans anticipate Super Bowl matchup, festivities

Super Bowl XLVIII will feature a matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey this Sunday, Feb. 2.

The hype leading up to the event is partly due to weather. The forecast projects that temperatures will climb to 41 degrees during the day, dropping to 28 degrees at night.

“I am interested to see how the weather will impact the first Super Bowl in the cold in a long time,” math teacher Zach Carter said. “I don’t think it will affect the outcome because [Broncos running back] Knowshon Moreno will still score touchdowns.”

Many sports fans expect a tough match-up between the two teams on Sunday.

“I was hoping to watch the Patriots, but I’ll enjoy watching the Broncos and Seahawks because they’re both great teams,” senior Nureli Musabay said.

America will tune-in to its most watched television broadcast of the year to watch professional football’s elite athletes.

“I want to see the ‘Beast’ [Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch] in action,” senior Clayton O’Neil said. “I want to see Richard Sherman thrive too.”

Richard Sherman, a cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks, has received much media attention in advance of the game regarding his showboating.

“I think Peyton Manning will beat Richard Sherman and stop his trash-talking,” sophomore Kevin Swecker said.

However, football is not only the component of the Super Bowl Sunday. It is also the second largest day for food consumption in the United States.

“My favorite part of the Super Bowl festivities is the food,” junior Melissa Hadley said. “Buffalo cream cheese mixed with chicken is incredible.”

Due to viewership, commercial airtime during the Super Bowl is the most expensive of any channel all year, drawing in some of TV’s most creative advertisements.

“I think the commercials are going to be really good with cool graphics,” junior Matthaeus Rajoo said. “Last year’s commercials weren’t the best, but I think this year will be better.”

Many people hold Super Bowl parties for family and friends to watch the game.

“The buildup of getting together with friends and the whole pageantry is what I enjoy the most about the Super Bowl,” Carter said.
