Senior ice hockey players anticipate their last regular season match tonight

Ice hockey will celebrate its seniors tonight as the team faces Westfield/Heritage in the final regular season match at 7:55 p.m. at Reston SkateQuest.

Senior Carter Schultz, who won the “Most Valuable Player” award his sophomore year, has mixed feelings going into the game.

“It’s going to be bittersweet saying goodbye to the season and the boys,” Schultz said.

Schultz and his fellow seniors had high hopes for their final season.

“Every year, we shoot for states,” Schultz. “We haven’t gotten there yet. We only won two games this season, but we were close.”

Despite falling short of their goal, senior players are pleased with the improvement they noticed in their teammates.

“I think we lost some games that we should have won, but as a team we’ve grown,” assistant captain Joey Owens said. “Lots of young players have gotten better, and they’ll be even better next year.”

The team plans to make this final game count.

“Tonight’s going to be a big one,” Schultz said.

Senior captain Logan Nasr, the MVP last season, is looking to strong performances from a few key players to help the team improve its record to 3-7 tonight.

“We’ve got some all-star players like [senior] Stephen Galanti,” Nasr said. “’Get the puck to Galanti.’ That’s our motto.”

In addition to Galanti, senior Tasha Adams is recognized as a team asset. Last season, she received the “Best Attitude” award. Next year, Adams, affectionately known as T-Cat by her teammates, will continue playing ice hockey in the New England Small College Athletic Conference for Trinity College.

“She’s sick,” Nasr said.

The seniors hope that tonight’s dance will not interfere with the turnout at their game.

“Hockey senior night over Sadie’s Hawkins dance,” Nasr said.

If students must miss the match, though, they will have a final opportunity to watch the seniors play. South Lakes ice hockey faces school rival, Herndon, in the Hardcore Hockey High School Classic March 7 at 6:00 p.m. at Reston SkateQuest. Admission to the event is $2, and free prizes will be given away.
