Taylor Swift announced her new studio album Midnights on Aug 28, 2022. As she came up to claim her award for “Video of the Year” for her song “All Too Well” at the MTV Video Music Awards, she announced her newest album to the world. …I had sort of made up my mind that, if you were going to be this generous and give us this [award], I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand-new album comes out October 21.” Pausing for the applause, she finished with: “And I will tell you more at midnight.” Later that evening she posted the album cover and the soon to be named 13 songs on Instagram. The post explained, “Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out on October 21. Meet me at midnight.” In the same post Swift writes about the thoughts she had that inspired this new album: “We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears.”

Many fans suspect that the title Midnights relates back to some of her previous songs. Throughout her discography she has referenced nights that were either endless or nightmare fueled. Songs like “You Are In Love” and “You Belong With Me” are about nights that she dealt with the idea of love.

A common theme across her albums, Taylor Swift often sings about her experiences with love and heartbreak. This album will give fans insight into what she’s been up to recently. It’s been two years since the songwriter has made an entirely new album. Evermore, which was released in 2020, was the last album Swift wrote with new content. Her last two releases were re-recordings of her previous albums; Red and Fearless. With these new songs soon to come our way, we await nights full of joy and heartbreak.
