The Leadership group is preparing for a coat drive, which is taking place here at South Lakes as well as in other places around the community.
“I really love doing community service and things like that, and my group in leadership has some flexibility, so I thought it would be a good time to start a project like that,” senior Becky Oswalt said. “I have done events like this in middle school and my first two years of high school so I wanted to bring it back bigger and better than before.”
The coat drive started as a collaborative event with the Make A Wish promotion, which was originally planned in December.
Now that the Make A Wish promotion is over the coat drive will become the main focus of the leadership class over the next few weeks.
To further increase the opportunities for donations Leadership will also work with the coat drive in locations outside of the school.
“I feel pretty confident that we will have a good turnout because we are not just doing it at South Lakes,” Oswalt said. “We are also doing it at Sunrise Valley Elementary School and Langston Hughes Middle School, so we have been able to contact all the teachers, parents, and the students and inform them about the coat drive. We are also going to the kiss and ride at Sunrise Valley to get more coats.”
Those interested can drop off their coats in specially marked boxes in the main offices of South Lakes, Langston Hughes, Sunrise Valley, and also the kiss and ride at Sunrise Valley.
