This year South Lakes community member Marie Turner became the new IB coordinator after the retirement of the previous IB coordinator of eight years, Anne Stowe.
Turner originally taught math and science at South Lakes and was the Assessment Coach in charge of SOL testing.
“This is my tenth year at South Lakes,” said Turner. “I’m a career changer. I went to UVA Engineering School and worked as a computer consultant for about twenty years. Then, I became a teacher.”
Mrs. Turner’s other position at South Lakes is the adviser of the forensics team, a group that works with debate.
“I am the forensics team sponsor, not the CSI type of forensics, but the public speaking type of forensics.”
Turner also enjoys many activities outside of school alongside her husband, history teacher Alexander Turner, and fellow teachers.
As the new IB coordinator, Turner shares some advice for students.
“Take advantage of all the opportunities you have available to you at South Lakes,” said Turner. “Use this time in high school to find your passion by pursuing clubs, classes, and activities that appeal to you. The by-products of you taking these calculated risks are that you have more fun in high school and end up looking pretty good on your college applications.”
