4 things to do this weekend (9/1 – 9/3)

1.) Catch the American Music Festival at Virginia Beach! This epic event features 26 performing artists, which include the Goo Goo Dolls, Ziggy Marley, the Plain White T’s, ZZ Top, the Drifters, Carbon Leaf, and Kendall Street Company. In between concerts, take some time out and enjoy seafood (or a burger, if you’re a landlubber) at Waterman’s Surfside Grille.

2.) Enjoy the Apple Gala and Fresh Cider Festival at Great Country Farms in Bluemont, Virginia! Fall is just around the corner…celebrate with apple picking, various mazes, wagon rides, slides, a putt-putt golf course, fresh apple cider, cider donuts, hand-dipped ice cream, and food from the Roosteraunt (BBQ pork sandwiches, flat bread pizzas, kettle corn, and freshly made apple pies). You can also buy jams, jellies, honey, and other homemade goodies.

3.) Don’t miss the battle of the food trucks in Fishersville, Virginia! The trucks hail from all over the state of Virginia and feature a variety of cuisine. Competitors include The Black Pearl, Paella Perfecta, 106 Street Food, Hops Kitchen, Holy Smokes BBQ, Matchsticks BBQ, Gloria’s, Sourdough Pizza, and more. Don’t feel guilty for pigging out; all of the proceeds support the MaDee Project, a nonprofit that supports pediatric cancer patients and their families. There are also plenty of activities to keep the little brothers and sisters happy (think face painting, crafts, pony rides, storytelling, and magic shows), as well as multiple bands playing while you eat (such as the Bell Hornets and the Dany Goodson Band).

4.) Looking for the ulitmate picnic spot? Head to the park at Daingerfield Island in Alexandria, Virginia! Appreciate nature’s beauty and soak up the last days of summer while you savor your lunch. You’ll be able to watch airplanes, sailboats, and windsurfers in the distance or go hiking on nearby trails.
Picnic tip: My go-to picnic meal would be a tasty BLT sandwich made with fresh, juicy tomatoes (bread them, if you like), toasted bread, arugula, peppered bacon, and an herb mayonnaise. The picnic would not be complete without iced tea, watermelon, barbecue potato chips, and a slice of homemade pie. Make sure to keep your ingredients cold with a cooler, and assemble your sandwich when you reach your destination. If you’re not a sandwich fan or you want everything prepped and ready before you go, pack a cold cucumber soup or gazpacho instead.
