QRU? Counselor Shari Winston

Shari Winston is one of the two new counselors at South Lakes after she served at Glasgow Middle School last year.

Tell us something personal about yourself. What are some of your likes and hobbies?

I’m a fairly new mom- I have a two-year-old son and he takes up most of my time, but I admit to being a Pinterest addict and I enjoy doing crafts with my sister. I love trashy TV, the Redskins, the Nationals, and the Yankees. I also love spending time with my husband- we love trying new restaurants and cuisines. I never turn down sushi!

What encouraged you to become a counselor?

My middle and high school counselor was less than helpful, so I really wanted to make sure that no students felt neglected or to not have a place to go when they have a problem. I have always wanted to help kids, but being a counselor has been a great way to do that!

What’s your education background? Where did you go to school? What did you study?

I received my Bachelor’s Degree at Binghamton University in Binghamton, New York. I studied social sciences with a focus on psychology and development coursework. I also minored in Spanish. I got my Master’s degree from George Washington University. I also received my teacher’s certification from the University of Virginia in Special Education.

Where did you work before you came to South Lakes?

For the last four years, I worked as a counselor at Glasgow Middle School in Alexandria. Prior to that I was a teacher at Rocky Run Middle School in Chantilly.

What do you like best about South Lakes?

I love the sense of community that I felt from the moment I walked into this building.

If you had one piece of advice to give to the students of South Lakes, what would it be?

If you see a new student or someone in need, reach out to them! You never know when you will be in the same situation and need someone to check on you!
