Varsity football traveled to Herndon Friday, where they won the Baron Cameron Bowl 21-7.
It was only the Seahawks’ (1-1) second win over the Hornets (0-2) since 2002.
The Seahawks took the lead on senior quarterback Rashaan Jones’s pass to junior wide receiver Akram Gibreel with 3:08 remaining.
Jones heaved the third-down pass up the middle of the field toward Zac Parker late in the second quarter. Parker and Herndon’s Darrius Hicks battled for the ball, and Gibreel, trailing the play, picked the tipped football out of mid-air for a 75-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 Seahawks halftime lead.
The Seahawks continued their scoring with a 15-yard run by junior running back R.J. Lee late in the third quarter. Lee ran in a second touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Hornets scored when sophomore quarterback Ryan McLaughlin threw 60-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm McKenzie with 10 seconds left in the game.
Though the game of neighborhood rivals might not have had much excitement till the scoring began in the second quarter, the hype squads made their presence obvious throughout the whole game.
Next Friday, South Lakes will play their first home game against Stone Bridge. Herndon will travel to Yorktown. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
