Senior swimmers (from left to right: Matt Hutchins, Greg Blanpied, Tyler Hutson, Ben Gallagher, Mark Lawson, Mel Anderson, and Jerrett Gulakowski) pose during their final home swim meet.

Swim and dive celebrated its senior night during a meet against Thomas Jefferson High School at the Herndon Community Center Friday, Jan. 10.

Senior swimmers Melanie Anderson , Sasha Avilov, Greg Blanpied. Beth Clark, Madisen Cook, Laura Ferraro, Ben Gallagher, Jarrett Gulakowski, Matt Hutchins, Tyler Hutson, Cara Kalinowski, Ben Kim, Mark Lawson, Greg Mayo, Conor McBride, Tope Oladimeji, Kaitlyn Prisciandaro, and Elwood White were honored for their four years of hard work.

Many of the seniors had anticipated this moment since they first joined the team their freshmen year.

“We’ve been looking forward to this for so long, and it’s finally here,” Avilov said.

Senior night offered them the opportunity to reflect on their high school swimming careers.

“It was a good four years,” Mayo said. “It makes it all worth it when you you get your senior night and you get to go in the hot tub the night before.”

In addition to hot tub privileges, the seniors were allowed to swim in special exhibitionary relays.

“You get to swim with random people and you get to swim your worst stroke,” Hutchins said.

The girls performed well enough in their actual events to triumph over Thomas Jefferson 171 – 144, while the boys lost their competition 211-94.

Swim and dive’s next meet is against Langley High School Friday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in Spring Hill Recreation Center.
