Ho ho ho, it’s officially Christmas movie season! It’s time to curl up on your couch with a cup of hot chocolate and watch some of the most loved Christmas movies ever created.
Home Alone
Starting off strong, Home Alone is a classic with six movies in the series. The first movie features a little boy named Kevin, who is a troubled kid who is misunderstood within his family. After getting sent to his room overnight because he caused too much chaos during dinner, he makes a wish for his family to disappear. The next morning his family leaves to go on vacation without him. When Kevin realizes he is home alone, he has a great time doing all of the things he was never allowed to do. Soon after, two robbers who go by the names of Harry and Marve attempt to rob the house. Kevin cleverly creates many traps that stall the robbers until the police finally catch them. Fans love this film because of its fun and entertaining plot, and its overall classic Christmas feel. Madelyn Lawrence says, “I think it is a fun movie and very fun to watch.”
Nightmare Before Christmas
This movie provides a combination of Halloween and Christmas. The film follows the journey of Jack Skellington who is bored of the same old routine of scaring people for Halloween. When Jack accidentally finds Christmastown, he is immediately captured by the bright colors and warm vibes. He comes up with an idea to kidnap Santa Claus in order to steal Christmas for himself. This animated movie provides a unique, but easy to follow plot that keeps the audience entranced.
Elf
Starring Will Ferrell, this comedy film follows the journey of Buddy the elf who was accidentally sent to the North Pole as a toddler. Buddy doesn’t feel like he fits in among all of the other elves, so he finds his real father, Walter Hobbs the big businessman. If you are looking for a playful and lighthearted film, this is definitely the one for you. Fans of all ages enjoy this movie because it blends childlike wonder and heartwarming emotion. Abigail Willer says, “I love it because he’s funny and adds sugar on everything and he’s sweet and joyful.”
Polar Express
The Polar Express is a classic animated Christmas movie created in 2004. The movie follows a young boy who is questioning if Santa Claus is real. When he sees the Polar Express show up outside his house, he is shocked. His journey to the North Pole is filled with Christmas spirit and new friends. This movie is enjoyable for expressing the magic in believing and making new friends during the Christmas season.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
This movie came out as an animated movie in 2000, and a live action version in 2018. The Grinch despises Christmas joy. He represents isolation and bitterness. When the Grinch decides to ruin Christmas with his dog Max after being fed up with the Who’s constant celebration, he enters Whoville and takes away all of the Christmas decorations. However the grumpy Grinch encounters sweet Cindy Lou Who, and his perspective on Christmas gradually changes. Fans enjoy this movie because of its endearing message and heartwarming concept. Delilah South says, “It’s a very fun movie, especially the live action version.”
A Christmas Story
This family friendly comedy movie is perfect for the holiday season. It follows a young boy named Ralphie Parker as he aspires to receive a BB gun for christmas but he is rejected by everyone he asks. “You’ll shoot your eye out,” said the store Santa. On Christmas morning he is disappointed to find that he didn’t get his BB gun but there is one last gift left and when he opens it he finds what he has been desiring a BB gun!
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
The most famous reindeer of all Rudolph. This classic christmas follows as it follows a reindeer born with a red nose that glows. He struggles to fit in with the other reindeers as he is different from them and they make fun of him for having a red nose. There is a thick fog that prevents Santa from delivering his presents but Rudolph’s red nose can cut through the fog and he ends up guiding Santa’s sleight saving christmas. Fun fact this movie is actually a stop motion animation movie meaning the characters were physically moved and photographed one frame at a time making it look like they were moving.
A Charlie Brown Chritmas
This cute little short move only 30 minutes long follows Charlie Brown and his iconic gang of friends as he lacks holiday spirit. He decides to get involved in the school play by directing but rehearsals are chaotic and unsuccessful. He has to find a tree for the play and ends up choosing a really small tree. No one likes the tree that he chooses but after Linus’s speech everyone helps decorate the tree singing and transforming it from sad to beautiful and Charlie Brown finally feels some Christmas spirit.
Frosty the Snowman
Frosty who had a jolly happy soul. Written by the same authors of Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer, this movie follows a snowman named Frosty who comes to life after the kids put a magical top hat on him but a greedy magician who once owned the hat wants it back. The temperature starts to rise and it is threatening to Frosty as he starts to melt. The kids and him have to travel back to the north pole to save him.
- Christmas Vacation
This holiday comedy follows Clark Griswold as he aspires to host the perfect classic Christmas for his family but he is constantly finding himself in sticky situations from his bad luck and pressures of wanting to make Christmas magical. He makes sure everything is perfect from the lights to the trees and house decorations. Unexpectedly his extended family arrives, making matters worse. Check out this movie next time you want some holiday spirit and a little chuckle.
