Varsity football is preparing to play the 5-1 Madison Warhawks in this year’s homecoming game, hoping to improve on its 2-4 record.
Despite the slow start, players feel confident that a homecoming upset will occur.
“I’m not worried at all about Madison’s record,” sophomore defensive lineman Joshua Hairston said. “Teams like that always are overconfident and expect to win, but we will put up a fight no matter what the score is.”
Although the general vibe for the game appears positive, some students doubt the resolve of the football team due to its current record.
“The football team is not going to win on Friday,” freshman Brett Matthes said. “Madison beat Stonebridge, and Stonebridge killed us when we played.”
Other students worry about the consistency of the football team and if it will play as well as it can.
“Both teams have a really strong defense,” sophomore nose tackle Chris Marshall said. “Offensively I have no idea what is going to happen. If you’ve watched our games you know we can score. It’s just a matter of doing the little things and coming together as a unit.”
Marshall was supposed to play for JV and varsity teams this season but was sidelined with a concussion and a spine injury from a practice early in the summer.
Despite doubts many players still have confidence in the team’s ability to pull through in front of possibly the biggest home crowd of the season.
“I think we’re going to play well,” Hairston said. “All we need is for our offensive line to block well like their supposed to. We need the receivers to run their routes well, and defensively we have to get stops but if that all falls together then we will win.”
This game means even more to the seniors as it is their last chance to play a homecoming game during their high school careers.
“I’m really looking forward to the homecoming game on Friday,” senior offensive lineman Sam Babayan said. “We have been working really hard and I’m confident were going to come out on top.”
