Fall sports come to a close

As the playoffs draw near for football, and with regionals coming for volleyball, all other fall sports have came to a close.

Field hockey:

Varsity field hockey qualified for the regional tournament after a 1-0 win over Washington-Lee in the first round of conference playoffs Oct. 21. The team’s season ended with a 1-0 overtime loss to Osborne Park Oct. 29 in the first round of regionals.  JV finished the season with a 7-5 record.

“Upsetting the number three team in our conference, qualifying for regionals, and almost upsetting the number two team in our conference is a major turning point for our  field hockey program at South Lakes,” varsity field hockey coach Jessica Salo said. “Even though we are losing several key seniors after the end of this season,  we have several talented underclassmen who have stepped up to the plate throughout the season and will be the anchor of a strong and skilled 2014  South Lakes field hockey team.”

Football:

Varsity football defeated Marshall 38-7 Nov. 1. The team played its final home game of the season Nov. 8 against Fairfax. Seniors were honored as a part of Senior Night.  They lost 24-7, ending their regular season with a record of 5-5. They are set to play at Centerville in conference playoffs on Friday.

JV ended the season with a record of 5-3, after defeating Fairfax 7-0. Freshman football improved to 3-4-1 after defeating Fairfax 48-18.

Volleyball:

Varsity volleyball advanced to the semi-finals of the Liberty Conference against Madison, losing in three straight sets. The team will travel to Osbourn Park tonight to play in the first round of the 6A North regional tournament.

“Osbourn Park won the Cedar Run Conference Championship and we are entering the tournament bracket as a fourth seed,” varsity volleyball coach Cheri Hostetler said. “Osbourn Park is a solid passing team, so it will depend on how well they can  handle our attacking and blocking.  Our team has developed into a well rounded team with a strong offense, so it will be an exciting match.”

JV ended the season with a 2-1 victory over Yorktown. The team’s overall record is 6-8.

Freshmen also ended the season with a 2-1 win over Yorktown, finishing with a 8-6 record.

Cross Country:

The boys and girls teams both finished third in the Conference 6 Championships held at Burke Lake Oct. 31. Freshman Grace Obando, juniors Augusta Durham and Devin Nieusma placed twelfth, thirteenth, and fifteenth respectively in the girls race. Junior Andrew McCool and senior Nicholas DeAtley finished third and eighth  respectively in the boys race.

Both teams advanced to the North Regional Championships held Nov. 6. The team placed 13th out of 16 teams in the three-mile race. McCool led the boys team, placing 25th with a time of 15:45. Obando led the girls team, placing 49th with a time of 19:18.

“It was a pretty successful season overall,” junior Sean Miller said. “We had many personal records set, and our varsity teams both did pretty well at conference and regional championships.”
