West Virginia University offered a rare opportunity to seniors that wished to apply there during a representative visit on Dec. 1. A representative from the WVU admissions office came to South Lakes for onsite admissions and some seniors left the office with a letter of acceptance.
Most students apply for regular decision online through Common App or the institution’s website. This process calls for filling out many forms and awaiting until March to hear back from the college.
Although the student still has to fill out the college’s application online, onsite admissions allows for the students to find out the college’s decision immediately.
“The representative interviewed me in the career center and we talked about what I wanted to major in at WVU and why it interested me,” said Catie Skillman, who wants to study child development and family studies.
Skillman, Max Koehler, Jake Andrich, and Emma Waugh were among the accepted seniors who were also offered academic scholarships.
“It made me feel good that all my hard work has paid off,” said Koehler. “Now I don’t have to wait around stressed out until March.”
Senior Monika Shayka did not participate in the onsite admissions Friday but would like for onsite admissions to be more common.
“I wish that my top schools did onsite admissions,” said Shayka. “It would cut out a lot of the anxiety I am feeling now even after I’ve submitted my applications. I just want to know if I got in or not. Waiting for March to come is so nerve racking.”
Skillman does not know whether or not she will definitely attend WVU, but she is relieved she already has an option.
“The instant gratification I got from the onsite admission was amazing.”
